Abused and Silenced: A Look at Data from Faisalabad

“Go commit suicide. Nobody is going to listen to you”

These words have echoed through police stations in this country thousands of times. Beaten, abused and tortured, the people who turn to the police for help are reminded of their powerlessness and helplessness in a system that not only condones brutality and torture by the police, but often rewards it too. These are the same words that were spoken by a police officer, when Noor Bibi, an elderly widow, approached him to register a complaint of police mistreatment. In their attempt to arrest her son from their house during a raid, Faisalabad Police beat Noor and her young daughters with bamboo whips and batons, dragged them out into the streets and publicly humiliated them in front of their neighbors.
